Canada Finishes 17th At World Team Championships

Posted by scooper on February 3rd, 2010

The Canadian team of Alain Martel, captain, Tyler Edey, Jason Klatt & Erik Hjorleifson lost their second match of the day, 4-2, to the team from Denmark at the World Team Championships in Germany. Denmark now advances to the final 16 single elimination stage.

After trailing 3-0, the Canucks mounted a challenge when Martel beat Kasper Kristoffersen, 8-5, in a 9-Ball set, & Hjorleifson beat Bahram Lotfy, 7-2, in 10-Ball.

Klatt did recover from a 3-0 deficit, against Kasper Thygesen, & tied the 10-Ball set at 5-5, but then lost the last two racks. A win by Klatt would have forced a shoot out to decide the winner.  Canada won their shoot out against Austria earlier in the championships.

The format of the event is two doubles 8-Ball sets, two single 9-Ball sets, & two single 10-Ball sets. If a match is tied, a shoot out determines the winner.

Canada Eliminates Austria At World Team Championships

Posted by scooper on February 1st, 2010

The Canadian team of Alain Martel, Tyler Edey, Jason Klatt, and Erik Hjorleifson needed a shoot out to beat the Austrian team at the World Team Championships in Hannover, Germany.

After trailing the match 3-1, Canada had to win the last two 10-Ball matches to force the shoot out. Hjorleifson got his team back in the match with a huge 7-1 win over Maximillian Lechner.

Klatt then beat WPBA star Jasmin Ouschan, 7-4, to knot the mach at three. Team Canada then proceeded to out pot their opponents in the shoot out.

In the shoot out teams shoot a pot that is a little bit more difficult than a spot shot. Hjorleifson had this to say about the shoot out format. "Sounds kind of weird but has actually been accepted very well by the players and is exciting for the fans."

Up next for the Canadian team is a match with the team from Israel on Wednesday. Israel had a first round bye, then lost 4-2 to Russia.
